چکیده

Pinnipeds, as any mammal species, use multimodal signals, including olfactory ones, to ensure vital functions. Thus, some pinniped species seem able olfaction in both social and foraging contexts discriminate between different odors air natural artificial odors, but studies on that topic remain scarce. Here, we studied the capabilities of California sea lions living captivity at La Flèche Zoo (France) terrestrial aquatic environments. We used two categories odors: (from familiar individuals same group, unfamiliar from another Zoo, animal zookeepers a carnivore) non-social (food identified repellents certain vertebrates). Several behavioral parameters were measured analyzed number duration contact with odor, mouth openings, vocalizations (air only) bubble production (water only). Our results, although limited by low animals monitored (n = 5), suggest are under water. In environment, process allowing perception remains be characterized. Applications this work could considered captive conditions well wild.

Transplacental transfer of organochlorines in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

The transplacental transfer of organochlorines (OCs) in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) was investigated by analyzing blubber samples from 20 female sea lions and their fetuses during the last trimester of pregnancy. A rapid, high-performance liquid chromatographic, photodiode-array method was used to measure blubber concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including di...

California sea lions (Zalophus californianus californianus) have lower chlorinated hydrocarbon contents in northern Baja California, México, than in California, USA.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHs) were determined in blubber samples of 18 California sea lions (Zalophus californianus californianus) that stranded dead along Todos Santos Bay, Ensenada, Baja California, México, January 2000-November 2001. Summation operatorDDTs were the dominant group (geometric mean 3.8 microg/g lipid weight), followed by polychlorinated biphenyls ( summation operatorPCBs, 2.96...

Age-specific birth rates of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) in the Gulf of California, Mexico

Estimates of demographic parameters are essential for assessing the status of populations and assigning conservation priority. In light of the difficulties associated with obtaining such estimates, vital rates are rarely available even for well-studied species. We present the first estimates of age-specific birth rates for female California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) >10 yr of age. Thes...

Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus californianus) from the Gulf of California, México.

We report concentrations of several classes of organochlorines (OCs) in the blubber of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) from the Gulf of California. Summed OC levels measured in 34 wild-ranging animals were, in general, lower than those previously reported in sea lions from the eastern Pacific. The rank order of OCs was SigmaDDTs (mean=3400 ng g(-1 ) lipid weight [lw]) > SigmaPCBs ...

The role of organochlorines in cancer-associated mortality in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

Wild California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) have an unusually high prevalence of neoplasms (18% of stranded dead adults) and high levels of contaminants. The contribution of organochlorine (OC) tissue burdens to the probability of sea lions dying from carcinoma was explored using a logistic regression model. Levels of PCBs and DDTs were determined in blubber of sea lions diagnosed with m...
